Employability Skills
Learning Outcomes and Application This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to inspect and report on obstacle limitation surfaces (OLS) in compliance with relevant regulatory requirements and national operating standards.It includes performing a visual inspection of OLS, reporting obstacles in OLS and reporting the return of an aerodrome to the previous status.This unit addresses aviation technical skill requirements (physical, mental and task-management abilities) related to aerodrome operations duties of ground operational personnel and contributes to safe and effective performance in complex aviation operational environments.Operations are conducted as part of recreational, commercial and military aircraft activities across a variety of operational contexts within the Australian aviation industry.Work is performed independently or under limited supervision as a single operator or within a team environment.Licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements are applicable to this unit.
Duration and Setting X weeks, nominally xx hours, delivered in a classroom/online/blended learning setting.

Elements of Competency Performance Criteria              
Element: Perform a visual inspection of OLS
  • OLS are inspected visually and existing approved obstacles inspected for compliance with their approval and objects or structures that have or may become obstacles are identified
       
Element: Obstacles in OLS are removed in accordance with workplace procedures
       
Element: Where an obstacle cannot be removed, a determination for reporting, marking or lighting the obstacle is made in accordance with workplace procedures
       
Element: Approved obstacles are inspected visually and checked for compliance in accordance with regulatory requirements
       
Element: Report obstacles in OLS
  • Where an obstacle cannot be removed, information required for calculating declared distances and supplementary take off distances is collated in accordance with workplace procedures
       
Element: All relevant authorities or organisations are notified of the status of obstacles, including breaches of approvals, if obstacles can't be removed and, where required, declared distances for obstacles
       
Element: All relevant authorities or organisations are notified of appropriate marking and lighting requirements using suitable means of communication in accordance with regulatory requirements and approvals
       
Element: All relevant authorities or organisations are notified of illegal unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) operations in air space surrounding aerodrome using suitable means of communication
       
Element: Report return of aerodrome to previous status
  • OLS are inspected visually to confirm removal of temporary obstacles
       
Element: Relevant authorities or organisations are notified of removal of temporary obstacles using suitable means of communication
       
Element: Newly approved permanent obstacle/s are added to monitoring schedule in accordance with regulatory requirements and workplace procedures

Assessment Tasks
